Safety and Security?

Cachalia, at the forefront of the province's fight against crime, and his wife Nazira, who heads the Johannesburg City Safety programme, were enjoying an evening stroll in the gardens at Emmarentia Dam on Friday when they were accosted by two knifemen.

Nazira Cachalia's watch and ring were taken but the couple were not harmed.

The robbery of the Cachalias occurred at about 6.45pm. Yet it was only late on Tuesday - four days later - that he officially made a statement to the police.

Is this an acknowledgement, that the cops are going to do nothing about it anyway? I think that if even the chap in charge is not bothering to report crimes, it is sufficient proof that it's hopeless. People are no longer reporting crime if they are uninsured. I know I am guilty of this. It's just too much fucking effort because the SAP are going to do fuckall about it anyway.

Crime statistics are down but what percentage of crime now goes unreported? There used to be estimates in the old days that 60% of rape cases went unreported, Is this the same for petty theft, burglary and other non violent crime?

Please folks, Report the crime no matter how insignificant, and ensure that they open a docket, not just an entry in the incident book. The incident book is just another way the government and police are able to bullshit you about crime statistics. If it's in the incident book, nobody gives a shit and it definitely does not get added to the crime statistics.

They are lying to us, and we allow them. Our silence is killing us. Don't forget to make your cross for April 1.

Guy you are so right. If everyone reported every crime that was committed against them and theirs, AND demanded a CAS (computer aid system)number, crime stats would be very different. Only crimes with a CAS number become statistics, anything else is just a waste of time. People should be aware that if they report an incident and obtain a CAS number, they are doing their bit for the Country and the fight against crime, EVEN IF THE POLICE TAKE NO ACTION ON THE CASE.
